Musicians who don’t make music

I have so many friends who are stellar musicians but they never put out any music.

Maybe the reason I think they’re such stellar musicians is because they take the time to make sure everything’s perfect before they put out their songs. Or maybe it’s because they’re putting too much pressure on themselves to make the perfect song.

I think it’s the second one.

We’re not asking for a bulletproof, absolutely original, culturally tasteful eponymous debut album that’s rock solid from track one to track twelve.

We’re asking for a summer bop we can play for our friends in the car and say, “I know these guys!”

There’s a special kind of value for the rest of us in that, too. There’s a certain artistic perspective you’ll bring as someone with too much on their plate. There’s are songs to be written that you never could have before your master plan didn’t work out just the way you thought.

We need to hear them.

P.S. If you’re an artist, here’s what you should do when you realize you aren’t a prodigy.

P.P.S. Maybe the reason you haven’t shared your songs is because of fake humility.
